High School Electives
Elective Overview and Goals:
The elective program is offered with the intention of providing students the opportunity to explore aspects of education not necessarily covered in the core curriculum.
Each quarter, we make an effort to offer classes that make up a well-rounded curriculum. There will be an attempt to have a musical, physical, technical and dramatic option offered each marking period. Electives having a physical component may count towards the state requirement for physical education at the discretion of the Athletic Director.
Some classes may be compatible for academic credit—this is an important consideration for students who plan on participating in a semester or year-long program outside of TSA. The state of Vermont requires 4 years of English and a year of U.S. History. Please meet with Kimberly Barnhart if you have any questions regarding credits.
Students are encouraged to keep the big picture in mind when considering their options so that all requirements are anticipated, thus avoiding the "senior scramble" to collect studio art or physical education credits. Also important to note is that all electives, whether graded or pass/fail, will be included on a student's transcript.
Choosing Electives
In order to keep options open during the year, electives will be chosen each marking period. Families will receive a current overview for the year in August. At that time students and parents are encouraged to plan for the entire year, but will have the opportunity to select classes towards the end of each marking period, and be informed as changes arise. Students should also conference with their Advisors when selecting classes. Electives are assigned based on seniority.
Study Hall is available on an as-needed basis. Students do not receive credit for Study Hall.
Students who would like to teach or co-teach an elective must speak to the Elective Coordinator and submit a syllabus, sample lesson plan, evaluation proposal and essay.
High School Elective Requirements
Students must take five marking periods of art (1.25 credits). Art is defined by the creation or examination of music or artistic renderings through any variety of media. Students may fulfill up to two requirements by participating in the musical or band elective.
Three of these five art electives (.75 credits) must be a studio art.
Some Visual Art classes have prerequisites. Students may be admitted at the discretion of the instructor or the Art Coordinator.
